Consultant Psychiatrist – Eldercare
A committed psychiatrist is wanted to join team in Older People Services (ElderHealth).
ElderHealth provides a geriatric and psychogeriatric medical service mainly to the elderly population of a large provincial area. There are approximately 170,000 people in the area, of whom 20,000 are aged 65 years and over.
Current medical staffing of the Psychogeriatric Service at is two consultant psychiatrists (1 part time and the currently advertised position full time), and a Medical Officer.
The Psychogeriatric ward is STAR 1 (STAR being an acronym for Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation Services). It is a 15-bed ward, inclusive of a six bed secure unit. Consultant medical support is provided by a geriatrician from the co-located Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation 33 bed ward (STAR 2) for the under and over 65 patient group. Psychiatric and Geriatric components of the service share common resource and responsibility for patient care. The teams in both facilities are multi-disciplinary.
Professional Development and Peer Support occur from within the service as well as opportunities with Mental Health services and a well established monthly peer review for Old Aged Psychiatry in the lower North Island.
Acute medical care and rehabilitation is carried out at the provincial base Hospital and provincial facility and (49 beds between the sites). Outpatient clinics are also held these two sites. Psychogeriatric beds are sited at the base hospital where the geriatric and psychiatric components of the service share common resource and responsibility for patient care. The teams in both facilities are multi-disciplinary.
The position is full time, working in a key role within the multi-disciplinary team.
You will need to be eligible to register with the Medical Council of New Zealand in addition to being able to vocationally register in Psychiatry. You will also require advanced training in Old Age Psychiatry as well as having a higher qualification relevant to this speciality. Additionally you will require proven leadership ability, demonstrated teaching skills and a high standard of clinical care.
