The Hospital is a 350 bed secondary care hospital, which services a population of 230,000 for general neurology and close to 300,000 for neurophysiology.

The neurology service is run by two full time consultant neurologists with a special interest in epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction and is an accredited advanced trainee site. Ideally, a third neurologist would add expertise in neuromuscular disease or movement disorders, but any combination of skills would be welcome.

Both adult and paediatric EEG, nerve conduction studies, and electromyography are provided on site and there is capacity to offer evoked potentials. There is also an active botox clinic, specialist MS and epilepsy clinics, a multi-disciplinary MND clinic, and a rapid access TIA clinic. Inpatients are co-managed with general medicine and neurology runs the stroke team and a stroke thrombolysis service. Currently, there is no formal after-hours call obligation.

The service also actively supports the development of integrated care via close working relationships with general practitioners in the region. The neurology service is recognised across the district as being a leader in innovation and integration.

Current medical staffing of the Psychogeriatric Service at is two consultant psychiatrists (1 part time and the currently advertised position full time), and a Medical Officer.

The Psychogeriatric ward is STAR 1 (STAR being an acronym for Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation Services). It is a 15-bed ward, inclusive of a six bed secure unit. Consultant medical support is provided by a geriatrician from the co-located Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation 33 bed ward (STAR 2) for the under and over 65 patient group. Psychiatric and Geriatric components of the service share common resource and responsibility for patient care. The teams in both facilities are multi-disciplinary.

Professional Development and Peer Support occur from within the service as well as opportunities with Mental Health services and a well established monthly peer review for Old Aged Psychiatry in the lower North Island.

Acute medical care and rehabilitation is carried out at the provincial base Hospital and provincial facility and (49 beds between the sites). Outpatient clinics are also held these two sites. Psychogeriatric beds are sited at the base hospital where the geriatric and psychiatric components of the service share common resource and responsibility for patient care. The teams in both facilities are multi-disciplinary.
The position is full time, working in a key role within the multi-disciplinary team.

You will need to be eligible to register with the Medical Council of New Zealand in addition to being able to vocationally register in Psychiatry. You will also require advanced training in Old Age Psychiatry as well as having a higher qualification relevant to this speciality. Additionally you will require proven leadership ability, demonstrated teaching skills and a high standard of clinical care.
